Writers Scholarship Rewards Emerging TalentBy Amelia Book Island Festival The scholarship will be presented to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in English, journalism, communications or another writing-related major. Applicants must have completed at least 30 college credit hours and must have demonstrable ties to Nassau County, Florida. Application deadline is Aug.1, 2006, and forms are available online at www.bookisland.org. Applicants may also request a form by e-mailing or by writing to: Jackye Rubin, Scholarship Chairman, Amelia Book Island Festival, P.O. Box 824, Amelia Island, FL 32035. The scholarship honors the memory and love for writing of the late Christa Powell Walley, a young writer whose parents, Billy and Robert Powell of Amelia Island, are major donors of the scholarship fund. The 2005 scholarship was awarded to Sarah Baxter, daughter of Kathy and Mike Baxter of Fernandina Beach. A graduate of Wheaton College, she is seeking a master's degree in English literature at the University of North Florida. The sixth annual Amelia Book Island Festival will be Oct. 5-8, 2006. It features more than 35 noted authors, with opportunities to meet them and enjoy talks, programs and special events. The not-for-profit Festival promotes literacy by inspiring the love of reading and enjoyment and appreciation of the written word. About the Author:
