DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship for West and Central Africa (Fully Funded)

The 2024 DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship for West and Central Africa is a fully-funded programme that aims to offer scholarships for young and goal-oriented scholars.

The “Leadership for Africa” (LFA) scholarship programme aims to help young refugees and national scholars from Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Mauritania by funding their academic qualifications and advancement. The LFA scholarship programme will fund educational advancement in all fields of study except the following:

  • Law
  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Fine Arts and Architecture.

Scholars who will successfully get the “Leadership for Africa” scholarship will benefit from a complementary training program focused on key areas affecting these countries, which include:

  • Good governance
  • Civil society
  • Career development.

This program is an essential component that will complement their regular academic studies. This will ensure a comprehensive educational experience emphasizing leadership skills and societal impact.

LFA Scholarship Details

  • You will have to take a 6-month German language course in Germany before commencing your studies.
  • Free tuition for M.A. or M.Sc which will start in September/October 2025
  • There will be other mandatory training programmes, such as LEAD, that will be communicated upon acceptance.

Who Can Apply?

Here are two categories of individuals who are eligible to apply for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship for West and Central Africa 2024:

1. Refugees with Refugee Status:

  1. If you have been granted refugee status before April 3, 2023, you are eligible to apply for this programme.
  2. You must be in one of these countries (country of asylum: Ghana, Cameroon, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, or Benin.
  3. Must have a Bachelor’s degree.

2. Highly Qualified Graduates:

If you’re a graduate but not a refugee, then you need to fulfil the following requirements to be eligible:

  • Your Citizenship and country of residence should be Ghana, Cameroon, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, or Benin.
  • You must have a Bachelor’s degree

DAAD Funding, Application, and University Selection Process

DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship program will provide you with full financial support throughout your study journey in Germany. This also goes beyond just offering financial assistance; it also includes professional assistance, such as choosing the right university.

Before traveling to Germany, you will attend informational seminars guiding you on applying to German universities for a Master’s degree program. In addition to that, you will also have pre-departure phase preparations and seminars to orient you upon arrival in Germany and support you during your language course.

Application Requirements for DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship

The application requirements for the DAAD Masters Scholarship programme are as follows:

  • You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree that is at least 2nd class upper division level and meets German universities’ standards for entering a Master’s program.
  • Good proficiency in English or German.
  • For refugees: A copy of the Refugee ID card issued before 02.04.2023 is required.
  • For non-refugees: Citizenship or/and Resident of Ghana, Cameroon, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, or Benin at the time of application.
  • Less than 6 years should have passed since completing the last academic degree.
