NIHR Global Advanced Fellowships for UK and Low and Middle-Income Countries

The NIHR Global Advanced Fellowships is a prestigious and highly lucrative program designed for top-qualified individuals from the UK and developing countries. This fellowship targets PhD or postgraduate medical researchers at various stages of their careers, offering significant financial support and resources to help advance their work.

The primary aim of this fellowship is to fund research projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on global health, particularly benefiting people in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA). In addition to funding research projects, the fellowship also supports training and development opportunities, enabling researchers to enhance their skills and knowledge. Furthermore, it focuses on institutional capacity strengthening, ensuring that research institutions in LMICs are better equipped to conduct high-quality research and implement effective health interventions.

To be eligible for the NIHR Global Advanced Fellowship, applicants must demonstrate that their research specifically and primarily aims to benefit individuals in LMICs.

NIHR Global Advanced Fellowships Eligibility

For you to qualify for an NIHR Global Advanced Fellowship, you must:

  • Possess a relevant PhD or postgraduate medical research degree or have submitted your thesis for examination by the application deadline. In addition, you must have been awarded your degree by the time of the interview.
  • Be employed by a Research Institute or Higher Education Institution (HEI) in a Low and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) or a HEI in the UK.
  • Clinical applicants must have completed the necessary pre-registration training.
  • Conduct research that benefits patients and the public directly and primarily in countries on the OECD DAC list.
  • Not hold a Professorship or Chair position at the time of application.

The above are general requirements; now, below are the institutional eligibility criteria you must meet to be eligible.

Institutional Eligibility

LMIC-Based Researchers

These are the requirements for LMIC-Based Researchers that are either employed by a Higher Education Institution (HEI) or research institute in a Low and Middle-Income Country (LMIC). If that’s the case, then:

  • The institution must be able to provide you with appropriate academic support for the entire duration of your fellowship.
  • The institution you’re in should demonstrate a history of their recent research awards and a proven track record of their research funding.
  • Your research outputs must directly and primarily be relevant to addressing health and care challenges in LMICs.
  • You may also include other partner organizations in LMICs.

UK-based researchers

If you reside in the UK and you’re hosted by an HEI in England and the Devolved Administrations:

  • You must have at least one partner organization in LMIC(s).
  • Your research outputs must directly and primarily be relevant to the health and care challenges of LMICs.

How to Apply

Before starting your application, read the Global Advanced Fellowship Round 1 Guidance notes and Global Health Research Core Guidance for additional information.

STEP 1: Go to the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) on aramis.nihr.ac.uk.

STEP 2: First, you will be required to register with the ARAMIS system. So, provide a valid email address and complete the basic information. You will receive an email with a confirmation and a temporary password. Follow the instructions in the email to log into the system.

STEP 3: Once signed in, update your details, including your CV, under ‘Manage My Details’ before initiating a new application.

STEP 4: To start a new application, go to ‘My Applications’ and select ‘New Application’.

STEP 5: Choose the fellowship level you wish to apply for from the provided list.

STEP 6: Complete the Eligibility Questions to proceed with the application.

STEP 7: Complete the online application form. Ensure you thoroughly read all available guidance text and online instructions while filling out the form.
